What is a Black Hole?
A black hole is an area in space where gravity pulls so much that even light cannot get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a star is dying.
Black holes can be big or small. Scientists think the smallest black holes are as small as just one atom. These black holes are very tiny but have the mass of a large mountain. Mass is the amount of matter, or “stuff,” in an object.
The largest black holes are called “supermassive.” These black holes have masses that are more than 1 million suns together. Scientists have found proof that every large galaxy contains a supermassive black hole at its center.
Black holes do not go around in space eating stars and planets. That would be like a person trying to eat something that is smaller than a speck of dust. Instead, black holes are so massive that anything that gets too close—stars, planets, gas, dust, and even light—can’t escape the black hole’s gravity.
Black holes can form when a very massive star dies. When this happens, most of the star’s mass is compressed into a tiny space. This makes an extremely powerful gravitational pull. The star’s core becomes so dense that it forms what is called a “singularity.”
A black hole can also form when two neutron stars collide. Neutron stars are the smallest and densest stars. When two neutron stars crash together, they send out gravitational waves. These waves can be so powerful that they can form a black hole.
